Case studies

These case studies have been designed to cover four basic scenarios that members of the NHS pension scheme will experience. They are in no way exhaustive but you will be able to draw on certain relevant points that may answer your queries or, if not, we recommend you contact us for more information.

I Am Going To Retire

Dr Jane Price is 57 years old and a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Midlands area. She is a member of the ‘1995 section’ of the pension scheme. She has Mental Health Officer Status. She is a top level consultant with a Bronze CEA, giving her total pensionable pay of £136,935.

The Consultant Promotion

Dr Smith is 50 years old and is a consultant on the ‘2003’ contract. On the 1st April 2013 he moved up from level 6 (£89,870) to level 7 (£95,860). This included a 1% statutory pay rise. He is also in receipt of 5 CEAs (£14,785).

New Joiners

Sunny is 27 years of age and, on the 1st August 2013, successfully applied for a job as an ICU Staff Nurse in her local hospital in the North of England. The job details are as follows:
